With the rail in the True position on a Heavy 9 track, the inside section of the track is likely to be significantly worn and chopped up by this stage of the day. While drawing inside is usually an advantage, jockeys may actively look to get their mounts away from the rail and onto what they perceive to be better ground in the straight. This could benefit horses that can peel out wide on the turn and build momentum down the middle of the track.

The Heavy 9 rating is the single most dominant factor in this race. It elevates the importance of proven wet-track form and stamina above all else. The ground will be deep and fatiguing, likely slowing the overall time and ensuring a grinding finish rather than a sharp sprint. Horses that cannot handle genuinely heavy going will be uncompetitive. Backmarkers will find it difficult to make up significant ground unless the pace is run at a suicidally fast tempo, which is unlikely. This surface strongly favours tough, fit, on-pace horses that are proven mudlarks.

The 1400m start at Wellington provides a reasonable run down the back straight to the main turn. This gives horses with early speed, even from wide gates like #7 Coastal Groove, a chance to cross and find a position. However, the long, sweeping turn and lengthy home straight are incredibly testing, especially on a Heavy 9 surface. This combination will make the 1400m a true test of stamina, and horses that have done too much work early will be vulnerable in the final 200m.

As a Class 2 Handicap, the race features developing horses with varying levels of consistency. This can lead to a less reliable speed map than in higher-grade races. Some runners may not have been fully tested on heavy ground, adding another layer of uncertainty. The handicap conditions mean proven heavy trackers are weighted accordingly, but their ability to handle the surface often outweighs the extra kilograms.
