Speed map
4. Powerful Eagle is the clear leader in this 1400m, but it will not be lonely. 6. Hollywood Epic has barrier 2 and enough tactical speed to sit right behind or outside it, while 8. Vacillation, 1. Pareto, 2. Matawai and 11. Master Of Rewards all map on-pace. That creates a busy first half without necessarily becoming a headlong speed battle: one leader, several stalkers, and very little room for the midfield pair to get comfortable.
The selection, 1. Pareto, is drawn barrier 7 and should be handy rather than buried, but it may need to slot in rather than press on. 8. Vacillation gets the inside draw and a positive stable angle, so its map could be more economical than several higher-profile speed horses. 7. Rubydoo and 10. Yes To Excess are the only midfield runners, and in an eight-horse field they are not far away numerically, but they still need the on-pace group to do enough work to bring them into the race.
Historical overview
The 1400m record at Beaudesert favours the front half, and the Soft version strengthens that view. Across all 24 races at the trip, Leaders (1–3) have won 33.3% and the midfield band has dropped to 12.5%. On Soft ground, the first-three band rises to 50.0% of winners at a 16.7% strike rate.
The 3m rail does not have a usable separate sample, so the best guide is the Soft 1400m history. It gives middle barriers 50.0% of wins, which is useful for Powerful Eagle and Pareto, while wide draws are still a disadvantage. The market has been fairly strong in this scenario, with the $2–$5 range winning 60.0% of Soft 1400m races.
- Soft 1400m leaders are the benchmark — Leaders (1–3) have won 50.0% of the sample, suiting 4. Powerful Eagle, 6. Hollywood Epic and 8. Vacillation by predicted position.
- Middle gates are workable — barriers 5–9 have 50.0% of Soft 1400m wins, supporting 4. Powerful Eagle and 1. Pareto.
- Midfield needs help — positions 7–10 have only 20.0% of Soft wins, so 7. Rubydoo and 10. Yes To Excess need the pace to lift.
Overall assessment
Powerful Eagle should take up the running, with Hollywood Epic and Vacillation close enough to keep the leader honest. Pareto and Matawai can land in the next pair, but they do not get the same effortless run as the inside tactical horses. The race shape still favours the on-pace group because the historical profile at the Soft 1400m is so kind to the first three in running.
- 4. Powerful Eagle — the map and history horse. It is the genuine leader, drawn in the middle, and the Soft 1400m sample says the first-three positions are the winning lane.
- 8. Vacillation — gets a better run than many from barrier 1 and has the Ms M Brosnan track angle behind it, with 5 wins from 17 runners and an A/E of 1.75. If Powerful Eagle is softened, Vacillation is the one with the economical stalking path.
1. Pareto is the published pick at $2.41 fair and $2.89 target against an early $2.00 quote. It maps positively in the on-pace line and Archie Mc Colm's Beaudesert record is a small plus, but it may settle just behind the strongest historical lane rather than in it. My read respects Pareto as a major chance, but gives the clearest evidence to Powerful Eagle and Vacillation.
